Leaders In Environmentally Friendly Signage
Published Aug 5, 2020 by Superior Signs
At Superior Signs we recognize that it is the responsibility of every single company to do their part in ensuring their business works to reduce their carbon footprint. After all, every dollar you spend is a vote towards the kind of future you want. We strive to ensure every single dollar spent with us is a vote towards a greener tomorrow.
To us, going green isn’t a trend or a sales tactic. We have a strong drive to keep our industry as eco-conscious as possible. The steps we are taking to reduce our impact are real and only just the beginning. For example, we have recently switched to a paperless invoicing system that allows us to reduce the amount of paper we use in our shop.
In addition to the many other upgrades we made around our new shop, we have also bought some new vehicles. Recently added to our lineup is a fully electric Kia Soul®. When doing simple site checks or other city driving, we try to favour this vehicle as our go-to commuter. The only problem we have with it is that it’s so quiet, we have to remind ourselves it’s running.
Traditionally, bucket trucks require the engine of the truck to be running while you operate the lift. As we spend a lot of our time in the lift, we found it unacceptable to have our vehicle idling for an extended period of time. Not only is the short-term effects of this unacceptable, as we are often parked in front of buildings and other areas where people may congregate, but also the long term effects of added air pollution. To remedy this, we bought a new bucket truck, one where the lift runs on a battery. This allows us to avoid the prolonged idle time and instead turn the truck off while we are operating the bucket.
Our new location has many big beautiful east facing windows. This brings in a TON of natural light that our whole team appreciates. With it we also get a lot of heat coming through our windows. Having our air conditioners on full blast throughout much of the year was unacceptable to us. We installed a clear heat film on our windows that blocks too much heat from entering our building. We have noticed a significant reduction in our reliance on air conditioning since this was installed.
We believe that there is no excuse for any company, or individual, to not recycle! This is especially important for our industry as our store alone uses, on average, between 750 – 1,000 lineal feet of vinyl in a month. Our vinyl rolls have two parts to them: the vinyl itself that we use for signs, and a paper backing. We ensure that there are stations throughout our shop and educate our staff on the importance of recycling this paper backing.
We have gone the extra step to measure how much of this we are collecting a month and have found that we recycle just over 3-yard recycling containers a month. Ensuring this gets recycled rather than thrown into our landfill is only one of our promises to a greener future.
Recycling isn’t a new idea to Superior Signs, we’ve been doing it before all our recent upgrades. But now, it is more important than ever for us to not only recycle whenever possible, but also researching new ways we can continue to recycling.
We have recently upgraded our printing machines. When making the choice for our new printer, we opted for the one that uses an eco-solvent ink. This was important to us as these have less VOC’s which means that it is much safer for our environment.
In the past we’ve had to mix gallons of paint to get an exact match for our customers. We then had to dispose of the excess paint cans. Typically, we would only use small amounts of the paint can to get the ideal color which would leave us wasting the majority of the product. While we always recycled the cans, we were very conscious of the amount of waste we were producing.
To solve this issue, we have upgraded to a new Matthews paint system which allows us to mix our own paints in a way where we no longer had to dispose of the unused paint left in the can. Simply put, we mix what we need without wasting the entire can.
Here is an extract from the Matthews paint website:
"As part of the Matthews Paint commitment to the environment, we are continuously working toward becoming an even more eco-friendly facility while offering environmentally-minded products. Matthews Paint continues to develop and implement a "green" approach in all aspects of our business -- not just to meet today's guidelines, but to exceed them for the benefit of future generations."
At Superior Signs we have a strong commitment to doing our part in creating a green future. With every upgrade of machinery, we are constantly looking at the most eco-conscious option for our company.
What Digital Signage Can Do For You
Published June 30, 2020 by Superior Signs
In today's fast-paced retail environment, it can be tough for shops to connect with their customers who have their heads buried in their phones. This is especially true for smaller boutique style shops that don’t have the same brand recognition that larger department stores do.
Mobile marketers are also getting smarter, as they send targeted advertisement using “beacon technology” to directly appeal to customers. Not to mention all the outdoor billboards and displays that compete for user attention. For street side businesses, this can be a major challenge.
At Superior Signs, we know your stuff is great, now all we have to do is get people to come see for themselves. We have found that one of the best advertising techniques for retailers is to use digital signage that will attract customers to come into their store. This is especially true for digital signage displayed in windows.
Why use digital signage?
When we say the phrase “digital signage” you may be thinking the typical LCD displays that simply filter through a few advertisements. Well, as our industry is ever evolving, so is our signage. The goal of window digital displays is to engage your customers even before they step a single foot inside your doorway. Now moreso than ever, with all our many distractions in the world, it is important to get those customers to notice you.
"There is a diverse selection of options available which do so much more than traditional static signage. Digital displays can more easily capture the attention of customers, even under direct sunlight, and simple, efficient content management means retailers can keep their displays updated and eye-catching," - S.G Kim, executive vice president of visual display division, Samsung.
Digital signage is your one-stop signage solution. Rather than wasting paper getting monthly posters delivered for sales and opportunities, digital signage can reduce single use promotional material and instead provide an enviromentally conscious signage solution.
What retailers is this type of signage for?
While this type of signage display is most commonly used in larger named tech companies such as Apple or Samsung, it really does have a place in every single companies business. You could have the best products in the world but if noone sees it, you will never sell anything. Having a thoughtfully placed digital window signage will allow you to continuously update and showcase the best products you have to appeal to your customers.
Digital signage is a great advertising technique that has a place in every single market. The beauty of this type of display is you can change it as often as you need.
- Restaurants: As restaurants adapt to a new normal through this time, they can easily display their menus on this as well as shuffle through some photos of popular menu items. As menu items and prices change, you can easily remove it off your displayed menus at the click of a button. This allows you to have the most up to date offerings available with ease. The exciting look of a digital display is sure to stop passerby’s. It also makes it so that there is less traffic through your restaurant, especially on to-go orders.
- Clothing Stores: What better way to display your new merchandise than be able to cycle through some photos in your window displays? Have a big sale and want to bring in more customers? Draw some attention to yourself as you flip through a digital display. As the cost for these signs is lower than you think, monthly installment payments are likely cheaper than the posters you hang in your window.
- Health Offices: Display the services you offer, remind your clients of services or products you offer, or simply just get extra foot traffic through your door by enticing pedestrians to stop and stare at your space.
Wondering what a digital window sign will do for your company? Call us today to find out what we think it could do for your business.
Joining The Fight Against Covid-19
Published June 17, 2020 by Superior Signs
It is no doubt that 2020 is a weird year. As the news of this pandemic spread and almost the entire world began shutting down, we saw the first signs of what this would mean for companies around the world. As small business owners, we felt a responsibility to help other small businesses in our area stay safe while also helping to keep their doors open long term. Reading the statistics of the expected impact this closure would have on small businesses like ours, we knew we needed to join the fight against this global pandemic.
Because as small family-run business, we know we are all in this together.
We worked overtime to try to figure out what we can do to make it so businesses can re-open sooner while minimizing the effects this time closed has caused. We are working on not only creating the standard shields you see at the grocery store, but also adding custom flair to these orders that make you stand out.
This shield for a local brewery has a custom beer bottle shaped pass through.
We have also used a product called twin-wall polycarbonate that allows us to build barriers between booths at restaurants or client chairs in barber shops. This allows people to work closely next to each other while still keeping everyone safe.
In addition to these shields, we are doing a number of floor decals and social distancing signage to help remind everyone on the protocols. These floor spacing stickers help remind customers of the distances needed between them. While it is easy to go back to our old ways of crowding into areas, it is important to still apply these safety measures.
For this veterinary’s office, we took the colors from their logo and used paw prints to give a more appropriate look.
At Superior Signs, we care about working with you to find the solutions that will best serve your unique business. We don’t see cookie cutter solutions and instead make everything custom to order. To get your business open and operating sooner, we are working overtime to get your order ready as soon as possible.

LED, Is your Signage Game Lit?
Published March 16, 2020 and Updated June 19, 2020 by Superior Signs
At Superior Signs we like to stay up to date on all the latest trends and advancements in our industry. With more and more companies entering the market we find it crucial to not only have the latest know-how but also make sure that all our materials and machinery is the best of the best. We know how important it is for you to stand out. One of the best ways to do that is by being lit.
When making illuminated signs, we use a long lasting and energy efficient LED light called RGB lights. RGB, or red-green-blue lights, produce more than 16 million hues of light. With these three colors you have the option to combine different intensities of each color to create a multitude of colors. For example, to produce purely blue light, you’d set the blue LED to the highest intensity and the green and red LEDs to the lowest intensity. For a white light, you’d set all three LEDs to the highest intensity.
While there are some colors that fall outside of this triangle, their combination allows us to create a number of different colors allowing for your company to have a unique look. We place these colors very close in proximity to each other so that you will only see the color combination rather than the three individual colors.
What we love about illuminated signage is that they’re pretty low maintenance. You may be worried about burnt out bulbs or a portion of your signs lighting system going out but the great part about LEDs is they have an impressive lifespan and are cheap to maintain. You will be impressed to hear that LED’s have a typical 50,000 hour, roughly 5 year full-time, lifespan on their bulbs.
We know that environmentally friendly signage is important. These high efficiency bulbs are just that. Drawing a fraction of the energy of other light bulbs, LED lights will not cause your electricity bill to skyrocket, in fact you will likely not even notice their addition. Well, except for all the additional business it will draw in.
Looking to add some light to your workspace? Illuminated signage is a great way to give your company the facelift you’re looking for! Call or email us today and we can talk about the best look for your company.
Automation of the Sign Industry
Published November 28, 2019 by Superior Signs
The commercial signs of yesteryear, which were all painted by hand, offer a kind of beauty, personality, and longevity. Older signs in particular have a certain staying power. Hand-painted with a permanence that outlasts their original commercial messages, they tell a story of a bygone era.
With the advancement of technology, we’ve automated the process of making signs. Our employees are now able to use their craftsmanship and talent in different aspects. These days we have some very cool and interesting machines;
CNC router: this machine cuts 2D and 3D letters and objects.
Laser cutters: Our laser cutter allows us to cut acrylic letters with polished edges. We can cut much finer things on the laser than the CNC router. We can also engrave at different depths.
Channel benders: Our channel bender allowed us to precision form both flanged and reverse channel letters at industry beating prices.

Our New Location
Published Nov 7, 2018 by Superior Signs
At Superior Signs, we work to embrace the changing of a calendar year. As we prepare for yet another orbit around the sun we encourage all those around us to set some big intentions for what they want the new year to bring. After all, a new year is a great time for fresh new beginnings.
Oh, and what a year 2018 has been. After 55 years in the same location, we have moved to a new corner of Port Coquitlam.
Having owned Superior Signs for over 20 years we have seen a lot of growth. In this time we have grown the number of employees, more than doubled the amount of equipment, bought other businesses and quadrupled the number of dogs. Needless to say, our small shop square was bursting at the seams.
Dreaming as big as we do, we knew we needed a new space - a bigger space. This lead to the most exciting change for us… A change in our location!
Not wanting to stray too far from the home and community we have built around us, we moved just a little way down the road remaining within our home city of Port Coquitlam. This location allows us to service all of British Columbia, specifically central to the area between Squamish and Hope.
With double the square footage than we had previously, we now have the space and resources to take on new and bigger projects. One of the greatest things this new space has given us is the ability to take on new unique jobs that we never have before.
While we focus the majority of our time on traditional signs, the added space has allowed us to take on more non-traditional signs. This includes projects such as our 3D metal logos for local Indigenous bands.
The new location has also allowed us to add some new machines to our line-up as well as upgrade some of our existing equipment. One of our most exciting new additions is our new laser engraver & print to surface printer, which allows us to create more unique signs and make very cool stuff. We also have an upgraded paint booth and a new Matthews paint system.
As soon as we got our keys, we were so excited we had the whole move done in around a week. The move itself, while admittedly a bit stressful, went quite seamlessly.
Haven’t come in to visit our new location yet? Make the trip just a little ways down the road and come and say hi.
Hawthorne Seniors Care Community
Published Aug 1, 2018 by Superior Signs
Hawthorne Seniors Care Community has provided residential services for seniors in Port Coquitlam since 1958. It has recently undergone a large addition adding 4 different residential wings with private and semi-private rooms. We were asked to design, fabricate and install residential room signs as well as wayfinding for the new addition to the facility. After a couple of meetings with the care home administration to determine colours and design concepts the we were able to finalize a suitable new look for the wayfinding system and start fabrication of the signs. The signs were designed using soft colours to shy away from an institutional look and allowed for inserts for resident names as well as a picture to allow for a more personal touch. The wooden backing makes softens the effect of the sign and ties into the surrounding mouldings. After the signs went through our fabrication process they were installed on site and fit perfectly into the facility and blended with the existing cabinetry allowing for functionality without giving an institutional look.
Technical Safety BC
Published July 16, 2018 by Superior Signs
BC Safety Authority has changed their name to Technical Safety BC as well as their logo to match. They contracted us to help implement their new name and logo across their different BC locations. Each location had a different set of challenges to overcome and different sign types such as channel letters, push through sign faces, light boxes and pylon signs, to simple vinyl on their doors or parking signs. We confidently took on the project and helped them transition their image from BC Safety Authority to Technical Safety BC. The signs were shipped across British Columbia to their individual service locations and subsequently installed. Our scope of work included site surveys to determine individual signage type and sizes, permiting and shop drawings, fabrication, certification for electrical signs and installation. This successful rebranding project was completed over the course of 2 to 3 months to complete with 100% satisfaction from the customer.
Blakeburn Elementary School Sign
Published January 4, 2018 by Superior Signs
Over the summer months Blakeburn's main school sign was damaged. We were contracted by the school to create a new sign for the school. We decided to use a laminated wood beam as our starting point. We engraved the beam using a combination of flat endmill and v-grooved 3D tool paths creating a simple but elegant look. The letters were then infilled and the beam got a full treatment of a high gloss varathane. The results final result is was a simple natural looking entrance sign.
Air Canada Commercial Backdrop
Published Dec 1, 2017 by Superior Signs
Superior Signs was commissioned by Air Canada to provide a backdrop display for an upcoming commercial. The 12’x28’ backdrop display was fabricated out of layered painted precision foam board and all of the larger cotenants offset from the back wall to allow for halo illumination.
The display was shipped to YVR and installed in one of their hangers where part of their commercial was shot. The full commercial can be viewed here or below
Custom Signs for the Big Flat Pancake Co.
Published November 17, 2017 by Superior Signs
The Big Flat Pancake Co. is a local restaurant that opened up in Port Coquitlam. We were contracted by the owners to help fabricate the signage for the storefront as well as carry some branding elements throughout the interior of the restaurant. Using a combination of Non-illuminated, Front lit and Halo elements in their exterior channel letters we were able to give them a unique look for their signage while maintaining their branding standards.
Using airbrushing techniques, one of our Graphic Artists airbrushed the company’s initials into some onto their salvaged wood wall to make it appear to be branded into the panels giving their modern interior a vintage accent.
